Nurmagomedov’s martial arts roots
Khabib began training in wrestling at the age of 8 under the guidance of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who had trained extensively in wrestling and sambo. Khabib’s training as a child included wrestling a young bear (3). At the age of 17, Khabib began training in combat sambo which is around when he put on the MMA gloves and started fighting for a spot in the UFC.
In 2009 and 2010, Nurmagomedov won gold medals at the Combat Sambo World Championships.
“The Eagle’s” pro MMA debut
Nurmagomedov took his first pro MMA fight in September, 2008, shortly before he would turn 20, and submitted Vusal Bayramov at a Combat Sambo Federation of Ukraine event.
Nurmagomedov joins the UFC
The future lightweight champ joined the UFC in January, 2012, and Nurmagomoedov proceeded to defeat Kamal Shalorus by unanimous decision.
Khabib takes home UFC gold
After going 10-0 to begin his UFC run, Nurmagomedov was booked to fight Tony Ferguson for the vacant, lightweight title at UFC 223, in April, 2018. Just days out from the bout, however, Ferguson was forced out of the fight due to a freak, knee injury. Al Iaquinta stepped in as a replacement, and Nurmagomedov went on to win the 155 title via a clear cut, unanimous decision win.
Khabib trains in AKA in the US which is known as one of the best BJJ schools and MMA training centres in the world.
The infamous bus attack
Prior to UFC 223, Conor McGregor made headlines after he and a group of associates vandalized the bus Nurmagomedov and other fighters were in for the card’s media day. UFC fighters Ray Borg and Michael Chiesa were injured in the attack. The incident took place after Nurmagomedov and his team confronted McGregor’s longtime friend Artem Lobov in a hotel hallway, and a minor altercation occurred.
The biggest fight in UFC history (McGregor vs Nurmagomedov)
Nurmagomedov was booked to defend the title against McGregor at UFC 229, October 6h, 2018. The lead-up to the fight was extremely heated and ugly, as McGregor made controversial comments about Nurmagomedov’s culture and the history of Dagestan. Nurmagomedov proceeded to submit McGregor with a fourth round, neck crank, and the fight is believed to have sold around 2,400,000 pay-per-views: the most ever in UFC history. The post-fight brawl and suspension
After Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor he had words with the latter’s cornerman outside the cage. Nurmagomedov leaped over the fence and went after McGregor’s teammate, Dillon Danis. The lightweight champion was suspended nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and was fined $500,000.
The star’s growing family
Nurmagomedov married his wife and future mother of his children in 2013. The couple have two children, and in the summer of 2019, the devout Muslim announced they are expecting their third child.
Nurmagomeodov’s net worth
The renowned grappler’s net worth has been estimated to be around $3 million dollars (4). But in the summer of 2019, Nurmagomedov signed a new UFC contract, which his manager Ali Abdel-Aziz claimed would make the champion the highest paid fighter on the roster (5).
