Biography / Interesting Facts
Silva’s martial art roots
Silva was born into an impoverished family in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1975. The future UFC champion began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a child and also began taking Taekwondo, Muay Thai and Capoeira classes when he was a teenager.
Silva ends Rich Franklin’s run as middleweight champ
After taking out Chris Leben in less than 60 seconds in his UFC debut, Silva was booked to fight the reigning middleweight champ, Rich Franklin at UFC 64 in October, 2016. Silva proceeded to finish Franklin inside of the three minutes to secure the 185 crown. Franklin had won eight straight bouts prior to the loss, and had defended the middleweight belt twice, prior to facing Silva.
Silva vs. Sonnen: one of MMA’s greatest rivalries
Following Silva’s sixth title defense of the UFC’s middleweight title in April, 2010, the champion was booked to fight noted wrestler Chael Sonnen in August of that year at UFC 117. Due to Sonnen’s brash, and at times controversial persona, the match-up garnered extensive attention.
Sonnen dominated much of the fight with his wrestling and top-game, but in round five, Silva caught the American with a triangle-choke/armbar to secure the comeback victory. After the bout, Silva’s team claimed the champion had fought with an injured rib.
The two were booked for a rematch in July, 2012 at UFC 148. The second fight unfolded rather differently, however, as Silva stopped his rival in the second round with a vicious knee to the body and follow-up strikes. The card is believed to have sold over 900,000 pay-per-views, making it one of the biggest events in UFC history (3).
Silva’s storied reign comes to an end
After defending the middleweight title for a record, 11 times, Silva was signed to face rising, American star Chris Weidman at UFC 162 in July, 2013. As Silva showboated in the second round, Weidman knocked him out with a thumping hook to end the legend’s awe-inspiring reign.
Due to how the first fight ended, and because of Silva’s record, the fighters were booked for a rematch at UFC 168 in December, 2013. The second fight ended under tragic circumstances, however, as Silva’s leg was broken in round two when Weidman checked his kick.
The star gets flagged for PEDs
Silva faced Nick Diaz in January, 2015, and recorded a decision win over the Stockton star. After the bout, however, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that Silva had tested positive for several banned substances, including the anabolic steroids, Drostanolone and Androstane.
The fight was overturned to a no-contest and Silva was ultimately suspended for one year. The former champion denied knowingly taking any type of performance enhancing drug, and his team claimed a tainted sexual enhancement drug was behind the positive test.
In November, 2017, Silva was pulled from a scheduled bout with Kelvin Gastelum after testing positive for banned substances again. Silva once again claimed he never intentionally took any PEDs, and ultimately it was determined the positive test was due to a tainted supplement the star had taken.
The greatest fighter in UFC history?
Although Silva has incurred multiple losses later in his career, he is still widely considered to be one of the best MMA fighters in UFC and MMA history. During the peak of Silva’s reign as the UFC’s middleweight champion, however, the star was often referred to as the greatest fighter in MMA history.
You can see why with some of the exciting finishes he’s had over the years including his crane kick on Belfort (which was similar to Lyoto Machida’s knock out finish)
Silva’s estimated net worth
Due to Silva’s two-decade plus, decorated career, it’s been estimated the Brazilian star’s net worth is $18 million dollars. (4)
Silva’s Other Accomplishments
Silva has also featured in several MMA movies including ‘Tapped Out’, ‘The Invincible Dragon’ and ‘Like Water’ just to name a few.
He also opened his own private MMA gym equiped with top of the line weights, Bjj mats and cryotherapy tank. He was using this gym to help train upcoming fighters and prepare himself for his own fights. You can read more about the best MMA gyms here.
