Biography / Interesting Facts

Jones path to mixed-martial-arts

Jones wrestled in high school and went on to become a state champion wrestler at Union-Endicott High School in upstate New York. After winning a JUCO championship at Iowa Central Community College, Jones dropped out of college to pursue a career in MMA.

“Bones” pro-debut

The future UFC champion had his first pro-bout at FFP: Untamed 20 in 2008, and Jones finished Brad Bernard in less than two minutes.

Jones becomes the youngest UFC champion ever

After putting together a 6-1 UFC record, Jones was booked to fight the legendary and then light-heavyweight champ, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in 2011. Jones stopped Rua with a series of punches and knees in round three. Jones, who was 23 years, eight months and one day old at the time, became the youngest UFC champion ever.

The champ’s first big test

Armed with an awe-inspiring UFC record of 13-1, Jones was scheduled to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September, 2013. The champion was a heavy favorite to win the contest, but Gustafsson pushed Jones throughout the thrilling fight. Although “Bones” emerged from the fight with a decision win, it was widely considered to be one of the greatest championship fights in UFC history.

One of the most heated rivalries in MMA

Jones rivalry with Daniel Cormier is widely regarded to be one of the most intense the sport has ever seen. In 2014, before the two fought for the first time in 2015, Jones and Cormier had a brief, physical altercation at a press conference. Jones was fined $50,000 by the Nevada Commission and sentenced to 40 hours of community service for the incident.

In January, 2015, Jones defeated Cormier by decision at UFC 182. The fierce rivals battled again at UFC 214 two years later in 2017, and Jones won the fight via stoppage. That result, however, was overturned to a no-contest, after Jones tested positive for banned substances (see below).

Jones first reign as champ ends following hit-and-run incident

The star’s first reign as light-heavyweight champion was halted at 8 title defenses in 2015, but not due to a loss in the Octagon. Following a hit-and-run incident in April, 2015, which broke the arm of a pregnant woman in Albuquerque, the UFC stripped Jones of the 205 title (3). Jones was eventually sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Other controversies involving “Bones”

Although Jones is widely considered to be one of the greatest fighters ever, if not the greatest, the decorated fighter has been tied to several controversies. In addition to his aforementioned hit-and-run incident, in 2012, Jones plead guilty to a DUI incident in New York State. In 2015, prior to his first fight with Daniel Cormier, it was revealed Jones had tested positive for cocaine metabolites.

In 2016, Jones tested positive for the banned substances clomiphene and letrozole, and was ultimately suspended for one year. Jones denied knowingly taking performance enhancing drugs, and an arbitrator concluded the substances were not taking intentionally.

Approximately one year later, following Jones’ victory over Cormier at UFC 214, it was announced that the star had tested positive for Turinabol, an anabolic steroid. The fight was overturned to a no-contest and Jones was sentenced to an 18 month suspension. Once again, Jones denied intentionally taking any type of PED.

In 2018, as Jones was preparing to face Alexander Gustafsson for a second time at UFC 232, it was announced “Bones” had tested positive for trace amounts of Turinabol. The fight was moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, and since Jones had only tested for minute amounts of the banned substance, he was not suspended.

Jones’ famous brothers

Jones isn’t the only famous and accomplished athlete in the family. His older brother Arthur Jones played as a defensive end in the National Football League, and his younger brother Chandler continues to play as an outside linebacker with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

The light-heavyweight’s net worth

Jone is estimated to be worth $10 million dollars after fighting professionally for ten plus years, and becoming one of the best fighters in all of combat sports.

Jones personal life

While Jones is not married yet, he is engaged to his fiance Jessie. The couple have three daughters together.
